Bangladesh commemorated the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on a nationwide level on Sunday, holding rallies, seminars, and sports tournaments around the country under the theme ‘Tarunner Ongsogrohon, Kheladhular Manunnoyon’.

Ministry of youth and sports advisor to the interim government, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, inaugurated a rally that began at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium and ended at the National Stadium in Dhaka after marching through some city intersections.

Current and former athletes, sports organisers and other members of the sports fraternity attended the rally to promote the immense power of sport as a common cause for building a better nation.

A friendly football tournament with underprivileged children was held at the National Stadium, followed by a seminar at the NSC Auditorium.

Other sporting organisations also brought out separate rallies and arranged a number of activities to commemorate the occasion, with the slogan ‘Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion’ being adopted internationally.

Bangladesh mark the day in a festive mood every year since 2017 – three years after the United Nations General Assembly declared April 6 as the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.
