Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz won the BSPA Sportsperson of the Year 2024 award as the Bangladesh Sports Press Association awarded 11 sports person, one team and one organisation in 15 categories during a function at a city hotel on Friday.Ìý

Mehidy won the award ahead of SAFF Women’s Championship 2024, winning team midfielder Ritu Porna Chakma and the country’s leading archer, Sagor Islam, who directly qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024.Ìý


‘I would like to thank BSPA for arranging such programme every year. This ceremony is very important for every athlete. We can meet and talk with the players from other sports disciplines during this ceremony. It feels really good,’ Mehidy, who also won the Cricketer of the Year award, said in his immediate reaction.Ìý

Ritu Porna Chakma won the popular choice award, putting Mehidy and national cricket team express pacer Nahid Rana behind in the fan votes. Ìý

Ritu, who could not attend the function due to her participation in the Bhutan Women's National League, made history by becoming the first female player to win the Footballer of the Year award since the inception of BSPA awards in 1964

The Bangladesh Under-21 national hockey team, which qualified for the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup for the first time as champions of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2024 hockey, won the Team of the Year award.Ìý

The other award winners: Sagor Islam (Archer of the year), Jahir Rayhan (Athlete of the Year in track and field category), Nahid Rana (Emerging Sportsperson of the Year), Manon Reja Neer (Chess Player of the Year), Under-21 hockey team coach Moududur Rahman Shuvo (Coach of the Year), Rangamati’s football organiser Bir Sen Chakma (Grassroots Sports personality of the Year), Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat (Umpire of the Year), Bashundhara Kings president Imrul Hassan (Organiser of the Year), South Asian Games 2010 gold medallist weightlifter Hamidul Islam(Special recognition) while Shams Ul Huda Football Academy of Jashore won the Organiasation of the Year awards.

Youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, former and current athletes, coaches, and sports journalists attend the function, among others.
