
Cultural activists on Monday demanded restoration democratic environment and justice for students while the government imposed countrywide curfew and seized the rights to organise meetings and practise democracy during quota protests. Â
Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi general secretary Amit Ranjan Dey, playwright and cultural activist Samina Lutfa and Samageet Sangskriti Prangan artist and singer Amal Akash said that the government must revoke of countrywide curfew to restore democratic environment and justice for students, who killed in the ongoing quota movement.
‘Imposing curfew countrywide means that the situation of the country is nonstandard. So, the government should stabilise the situation by revoking the curfew,’ said Amit Ranjan Dey.
‘As internet blackout is continuing since Wednesday, people are facing many problems in communications, online banking services, online stock market trading, e-commerce platforms and international travelling. We demand restoration of democratic rights of the people and reopening of government and non-government offices, educational institutions and cultural centres of the country to normalise the situation,’ he added.
‘Citizens of the country are living under extreme mental pressure as they have no freedom of speech, Samina Lutfa said, adding. ‘The government must stop violence at any cost’.
To stop misinformation government should restore internet connection and withdraw countrywide curfew, she added.
Echoing Samina Lutfa, Amal Akash stressed to restore internet services to ensure rights of information and freedom of speech.
‘Collecting neutral information and expressing their opinions through the social media are democratic activities of citizens. Imposing countrywide curfew and seizing the rights of use internet is not acceptable in a democratic country,’ said Amal Akash.
He added that they also demanded a judicial inquiry into the deaths of common people and students.
