
Renowned theatre director and academic Syed Jamil Ahmed has been appointed director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy for two years.
The ministry of public administration issued a notification in this regard on Monday.
Cultural affairs secretary Khalil Ahmed said, ‘We hope Syed Jamil Ahmed will join on Tuesday.’
Syed Jamil Ahmed said, ‘I know about the notification from the website of the ministry of public administration. I hope I will join Tuesday,’ said Syed Jamil Ahmed.
One of the finest designers and directors of the country with pioneering role in Theatre Practices and Research here, Syed Jamil Ahmed was founder of the Department of Theatre and Music in Dhaka University.
He started his career as a member of Dhaka Theatre in 1974. In 1975, Ahmed received a scholarship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and left out of English Literature BA (Hons) programme at the University of Dhaka to join the National School of Drama in New Delhi.
In 1989, he received his Master of Arts degree in theatre from University of Warwick. He was awarded PhD by the University of Dhaka in 1997 for his thesis titled ‘Indigenous Theatrical Performance in Bangladesh: Its History and Practice’.
He has a number of research papers on the indigenous theatre of Bangladesh and has travelled extensively in Asia, Europe and North America, where he has taught and attended seminars and workshops.
Syed Jamil Ahmed won the Shilpakala Padak in 2016.
Earlier, Liaquat Ali Lucky stepped down from the post on August 12 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led government. He took charge of BSA as its director general on April 7, 2011.  Â
