Artist Suranjana Bhattacharja said that she sought refuge from pain in artworks displayed at her first solo exhibition titled ‘Stitched Collage of Life through Pain’ under way at Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Suranjana has stitched clothes to create forms, shapes and lines in her 42 collage artworks, which have been displayed at the nine-day exhibition. The artworks were created between 2014 and 2024.
‘I started to create artwork with clothes when I was admitted to a hospital in Canada in 2014. Back then, I could only use my right hand. I sought refuge from pain busying myself creating artworks with clothes. After I returned home from the hospital, I continued to create artworks and I have created more than a hundred artworks,’ said Suranjana Bhattacharja.
‘I came across stitching in my childhood days. I have been making collages and stitching clothes since 2014. I was inspired by the artworks of Wassily Kandinsky and Henri Matisse. I saw an artwork of Henri Matisse in the cabin of the hospital in Montreal. My first artwork has also been displayed at this exhibition,’ added Suranjana, who loves to create artworks comprising vibrant colours and geometrical and fractal forms.
‘Loneliness is not always a bad thing because it can help us to discover our true strength. When I was alone at the hospital, I wished to get well and experience the colourful world again. I realised that the world and life were beautiful,’ mentioned Suranjana.
‘Artist and teacher Shishir Bhattacharjee inspired me to organise the exhibition. After he saw my artworks, he said that I should display those. I am happy because this exhibition has received a good response from the audience. I will continue to pursue my career as an artist,’ ended Suranjana.
Her artwork titled ‘Cultivation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts’ shows a bird’s-eye view of cultivated fields belonging to national minorities.
Another artwork titled ‘Where the Chillies Dry’ shows a bird’s eye view of red chillies being dried in the sun.
A black and white artwork titled ‘Dada Shirt’, a collage, shows an abstract composition created with pieces torn from a shirt. The artist has dedicated this artwork to Dada artists.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated on April 19, will end on April 27.Â
