Six artists have depicted corporate control of the agriculture sector by displaying artworks at an exhibition titled ‘Sowing’ under way at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka at Dhanmondi in the capital.

Artists’ collective Uttorkolpo and the AFD have jointly organised the exhibition comprising 50 artworks, which are depicting food politics, agriculture, climate and nature. It has been curated by Golam Faruque Sarkar.

The exhibition is featuring multidisciplinary artworks, including drawings, sculptures, installations and photographs by Anika Tasnim Anup, Bipasha Hayat, Jafrin Gulshan, Golam Faruque Sarkar, Khandkar Nasir Ahammed and Sumana Akter.

‘We try to focus on farmers, seeds, conservation, consumers, food politics, nature, pollution and others at this exhibition. We have tried to create artworks using environmentally friendly mediums. Besides, some non-organic materials have been used to symbolise pollution of nature,’ said Golam Faruque Sarkar.

‘It is the second exhibition organised by Uttorkolpo. We want to organise more group exhibitions in future,’ ended Golam Faruque Sarkar, who mentioned that Uttorkolpo organised their first exhibition at the same venue in 2018.

The drawing series and installation by Bipasha Hayat titled ‘Bilupti’ depicts the traditional method of preserving seeds inside clay pottery items by farmers suffering from financial insecurity.

Khandkar Nasir Ahammed’s sculpture and drawing series titled ‘Apran-10’ explores the mystery of seeds which grow into trees.

Anika Tasnim Anup’s installation titled ‘Dhaner Crysopia’ depicts the contemporary situation of the agriculture sector of the country where native seeds are disappearing due to multinational syndicates.

Sumana Akter’s installation titled ‘Sohure Jiban’ depicts plants in urban areas.

Jafrin Gulshan’s multiple installations depict how corporations are dominating the agriculture sector of the country while Golam Faruque Sarkar’s photo print series titled ‘Kafai’ shows how syndicates manipulate prices.

The weeklong exhibition, which began on June 7, will end on Saturday.
