The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD said on Saturday that the government was using false cases as a political weapon against the opposition political leaders and activists.

Protesting at prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s remark that there is no political case against the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party people, the JSD made the remark.

In a statement, JSD president ASM Abdur Rob said that there is no provision for ‘political cases’ in the Penal Code or any other special law or anywhere in the constitution of Bangladesh.

‘Politics is not a crime. Therefore, there is no provision in any government or state law to file cases against politicians. Such baseless statements from the highest ranks of the government are not acceptable,’ he said.

He also said that the voice of politicians should emerge as the voice of the people, not the voice of the ruler.

The prime minister’s remark revealed her intention to perpetuate the plight of those involved in the struggle for democracy by filing new false cases or putting them in jail, he said.

‘Millions of false cases are being used as one of the political weapons to obstruct opposing views and paths,’ he said, adding that it is to be noted that the misuse of law threatens the authority of the state and ultimately the destruction of the state.

In the past, the Awami League president was in jail facing specific cases but later she was acquitted of all those cases, Rob said.

‘Remembering the past is the beauty of politics,’ he said.

‘Everyone in the republic is aware of the innumerable false cases that this government has filed against opposition leaders and activists to prolong its power,’ he said, adding that the process of convicting BNP activists in criminal cases by the police themselves as being plaintiffs and witnesses is unprecedented, illegal and uncivilised.

It is everyone’s duty towards the state achieved through the War of Independence to ensure justice for all citizens based on equality, equality of law and protection of human dignity so that the leaders and activists of the opposition party are not killed, arrested, sent to jail and accused in false cases due to the change of power, the JSD chief said.

On Friday, addressing a view exchange meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban, Sheikh Hasina said that there were no political cases filed against BNP leaders and activists.

The cases against BNP people are related to different crimes, she said, adding that they committed offenses, so, legal action is being taken against them.
