
Politicians, academics and professionals on Saturday at a commemoration meeting said that the ideals of Zafrullah Chowdhury must be established to restore democratic rule and establishing voting rights of the people in the country.
They said that the opposition political parties should wage movements against the government for restoration of democratic rule and voting rights of the people.
Citizens’ Committee to observe first anniversary of death of Zafrullah organised the commemoration meeting at Institutions of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Zafrullah died on April 11 last year suffering from kidney disease at the age 82 in Gonoshathya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi.
Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the country was now facing a fascist rule of the Awami League.
He said that Zafrullah was a revolutionary who wanted to establish democratic rule in the country and also restore the voting rights of the people which were seized by the Awami League government.
He called upon all the opposition political parties to wage movements against the government to compel them to resign from power.
‘We want to wage such a movement against the government getting inspiration from the ideals of Zafrullah,’ Mirza Fakhrul said.
Economist and former adviser to the caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman said that Zafrullah was a rare personality who wanted to establish rights of the common people.
For this he worked all his life for establishing a society free from repression, Hossain Zullur said.
Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Zamal Haider said that we must work for fulfilling dreams of Zafrullah and finishing his unfinished works.
Dhaka University professor Asif Nazrul said that Zafrullah was vocal against any sorts of misdeeds in the society and now people like him was needed in our country.
Sujan general secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said that Zafrullah was a fearless person who never hesitated to oppose any misdeeds.
Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said, ‘For establishing rights of the people we must get the inspiration from the ideals of Zafrullah.’
Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that Zafrullah always liked to work with youths and inspired them to work to establish democratic rule in the country.
Another Dhaka University professor Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir said that Zafrullah was against misrule in the country destroying the spirit of War of Independence of 1971.
Lawyer Sara Hossain said that Zafrullah always stood by the oppressed people and he wanted to bring radical changes in the laws and ruling systems.
Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu said that Zafrullah always followed political ideals of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.
Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that Zafrullah always worked for the welfare of the common people.
Gono Forum faction general secretary Subrata Chowdhury said that their party would continue movements for restoration of democratic rule in the country.
BNP central leader AZM Zahid Hossain said that Zafrullah who established Gonoshasthaya Kendra was a true friend of the physician community and he did many things for the improvements of the physicians.
On behalf of the family members, daughter of Zafrullah, Briti Chowdhury thanked all for remembering his father.
Businessman Abdul Haque said that Zafrullah always worked for the welfare of the common people.
Renowned photographer Shahidul Alam said that Zafrullah never worked for his personal interest.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD senior vice-president Tania Rob said that the ruling Awami League government did not give recognition to Zafrullah Chowdhury.
Gono Odhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur said, ‘We must work for finishing the unfinished works of Zafrullah.’
