Lutful Habib, brother-in-law of state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak who was accused of abducting and torturing his lone rival chairman candidate in the forthcoming Singra upazila parishad in Natore elections, withdrew his nomination papers on Sunday.

Abdul Latif Sheikh, district returning officer in Natore, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Lutfor Habib submitted an application to him through one of his selected representatives for withdrawing his nomination papers at about 1:30pm on Sunday.

Lutful Habib, also joint-secretary of the Singra upazila Awami League, came up with the move, a day after detectives seized his microbus and the weapons used in abducting and beating his lone rival candidate, Delowar Hossain.

Tariqul Islam, superintendent of Natore district police, said that on information, they seized Lutful Habib’s microbus from the house of Ataur

Rahman, the manager of one of Lutful Habib’s businesses on Saturday evening.

He said that after searching the microbus, they recovered two Chinese machetes, one knife, one Burmese cutter, two locally made ramdas, two steel pipes, two stamps, one homemade machete, and Lutful Habib’s election posters.

The police official said that they arrested Ataur Rahman and were interrogating him.

On April 15, a group of youths forcibly picked up chairman candidate Delowar Hossain, also a member of the Kalam union Awami League, in a black microbus in front of the Natore district election office when he went to meet with the returning officer after submitting his nomination paper for the chairman post in the Singra upazila parishad elections.

Minutes after his abduction, Delowar told reporters that the followers of his rival candidate Lutful Habib abducted his two elder brothers in the morning and held them hostage so that he could not submit his nomination papers.

Later, Delowar was beaten and sent home in a microbus in an unconscious condition.

Since then he has been undergoing treatment at the RMCH.

In CCTV footage, several Juba League, Swechchhasebak League, and Sramik League leaders and activists, close to Lutfor Habib, were seen picking up Delowar Hossain in a black microbus forcibly.

The injured chairman candidate, Delowar, is now set to be elected unopposed as his lone rival candidate Lutful Habib quitted from the race.

Delowar said that he heard about the information about the withdrawal of nomination papers by his rival candidate.

‘I have the ability to contest the election and win. Under the circumstances, however, I am going to become the upazila chairman unopposed. My first priority will be to make Singra upazila free from terrorism,’ he added.
