A group of leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly tortured two students, including a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, at Madar Bux Hall of Rajshahi University on Monday night.

The victims are Nafiul Islam, a member of RU JCD convening committee, and his friend Yunus Khan.

They both are 2017-18 academic session students of the university’s Arabic department.

On the other hand, the accused are RU BCL general secretary Asadulla hil Galib, vice-president Monu Mohon Bappa, joint secretaries Swadesh Sheikh and Sadiqul Islam, organising secretary Jahid Hasan, and Madar Bux Hall unit leader Mishkat Hasan.

Nafiul said that a group of BCL leaders and activists blocked their path at about 9:00pm on Monday when they were leaving the university campus by their motorcycle.

He said that BCL activists then took them to room 215 of Madar Bux Hall where RU BCL general secretary Asadulla hil Galib resided.

Nafiul alleged that Galib started beating him when he told them that he was a JCD leader.

‘They tortured me and my friend for three hours confining in the room,’ he said, adding that Galib also brandished his pistol to intimidate him.

‘At one stage of loading and unloading bullets, Galib asked me in which leg he would shoot first, and suddenly shot a round in my right leg but fortunately it was a blank shot,’ he alleged.

Later, the BCL activists handed over Nafiul and his friend to the university proctorial body at about 1:00am on Tuesday after journalists had gathered in front of room 215 on information.

Yunus Khan, however, could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.

Meanwhile, RU BCL general secretary Asadulla hil Galib denied the allegation of torturing Nafiul and his friend.

He claimed that JCD leaders and activists earlier tried to destroy the learning environment on the campus, and on suspicion they took Nafiul and his friend to his room for interrogation.

Galib said that he later handed over the duo to the university authorities as they did not find anything that could cause chaos on the campus.

RU proctor professor Asabul Haque said that on information he sent two assistant proctors to Madar Bux Hall who rescued the JCD leader from there.

He said that none of the victims lodged any complaint of torture or intimidation with him.

‘If any of them lodges a written complaint, we will look into the matter,’ he added.
