Frustration has gripped the family of ruling Awami League Jhenaidah-4 constituency lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, who has been missing since May 14, having gone on a medical trip to India on May 12.
‘We have maintained contact with authorities in both Bangladesh and India, but we are yet to get any news that can make us hopeful,’ Anar’s personal assistant Abdur Rauf told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Monday evening, adding that the family members of the lawmaker are now preparing to go to India.
The first secretary (press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, Ranjan Sen, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Bangladesh authorities have already started working with the Indian authorities.
‘The Indian police are working on it. They are analysing every development they are getting from different sources,’ he said.
On Sunday, lawmaker Anar’s wife and daughters went to the office of the Detective Branch in Dhaka.
Later, talking to reporters at the DB office, its chief, Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, said that Azim used a Bangladeshi SIM and an Indian SIM in India.
The two numbers were sometimes switched off and sometimes operational. The issue is also being discussed with the Indian police. The police are trying to find out what happened to Azim.
Harun said that on the morning of May 16, a call was made from Azim’s phone to his APS and a leader of AL’s Jhenaidah district.Â
But no one picked up the phone. His location was traced to Muzaffarabad.Â
He said they were taking this matter seriously and were in contact with the Indian police.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told journalists on Sunday that there was nothing to worry about the lawmaker.
‘The lawmaker has gone to Kolkata. He will come back,’ he said.
‘Our NSI is working. Indian law enforcement agencies have been informed. There is no reason to worry. He is a member of parliament. He knows what he is doing. He went to neighbouring India. He has not gone to Myanmar, where fighting is going on. I think he will come back,’ the minister said.
