Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Mirza Abbas said on Sunday that BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, its chairperson Khaleda Zia, acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and the party would not exist if the current regime came to power again and again.

‘If the common people of the country do not become aware and if this government remains in power, there will be no independence for this country,’ Abbas said, addressing a programme at a Dhaka hotel.

The programme was organised to launch the Bengali version of the English  book ‘Begum Khaleda Zia: Her Life, Her Story’ authored by journalist Mahfuz Ullah.

Shahriar Sultan translated this book into English.

‘If we cannot make the people of the country aware if we ourselves do not become aware, we will not be able to escape from this government,’ Abbas said.

He alleged that the government was pushing Khaleda Zia to death by not allowing her to go abroad for better treatment.

‘She is not allowed to come before us. She is not allowed to speak. The country’s doctors have given up hope. They say she needs to be taken abroad immediately,’ Abbas said.

Abbas said that history would bear witness to how a person was being killed knowingly.

Nagrik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna criticised the cruel attitude of the ruling group towards the ailing BNP chairperson.

Noting that Khaleda Zia has become the most popular leader in the political arena of the country with her own work efficiency, Manna requested that political leaders and activists read the book.

Retired Dhaka University professor Mahbub Ullah, also the brother of the late journalist Mahfuz Ullah, chaired the event, and poet Abdul Hye Sikder moderated the book launch ceremony.
