One more person, a supporter of defeated Kamarkhanda upazila vice-chairman candidate Selim Reza was allegedly beaten to death by supporters of another defeated candidate, Hafizur Rahman, in the early hours of Thursday.
Deceased Masud Rana, 45, a resident of Roydaulatpur village under Kamarkhanda upazila, is son of Abdul Mannan.  Â
Both the candidates are holding posts of the ruling Awami League and its associate body.
Selim Reza is the Awami League Kamaarkhanda upazila unit assistant general secretary, while Hafizur Rahman is a member of the Bangladesh Krishak League Kamarkhanda upazila unit.
According to the victim family and witnesses, Masud was allegedly attacked by Hafizur Rahman’s supporter Lutfor Rahman for supporting Selim Raza in the upazila elections.
Masud was attacked by the rival group supporters while riding his motorbike with two of his friends, Ariful Islam Prince and Shishir Akhand, they said.
They said that Ariful and Shishir were also injured in the incident.
The deceased, Masud Rana, is a teacher of mathematics at BUK High School in Kamarkhanda and a photojournalist of newspaper Somoyer Alo in the upazila.
Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital resident physician Faridul Islam said that they found him dead when Masud was taken to the emergency unit of the hospital at about 12:15am on Thursday.
‘We have found marks of injuries in his body. We have kept the body in the morgue for autopsy,’ he added.
The deceased’s wife, Nazma Khatun, alleged that Hafizur Rahman’s supporter former UP chairman Lutfor Rahman and his associates attacked Masud by stopping his motorbike at Balrampur Bazar.
‘My husband had undergone a bypass surgery. They hit him hard in the chest and he fell sick suddenly. Local people took him to the hospital and he died there,’ she added.
Kamarkhanda police station officer-in-charge Rezaul Islam said that they primarily believed that Masued was beaten to death by his opponents.
Masud Rana’s wife Nazma Khatun filed a case with the Kamarkhanda police station accusing 13 people, including main accused Lutfor, the OC added.Â
‘We will take the case after receiving the autopsy report,’ he said.
Asked for comment, Lutfor Rahman, the president of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party Roydaulatpur union unit and a former union parishad chairman, said that Masud Rana worked so hard in the elections despite being a heart patient.
‘We heard that he died of a stroke at Balrampur Bazar. Although my brother Abdus Samad is a supporter of the ruling party, my party has not joined in the polls. I have never supported anyone in the polls. They are trying to humiliate me politically,’ he added.
Selim Raza said that Lutfor and his relatives killed Masud over the upazila elections.
Kamarkhanda upazila elections were held on June 5.
