Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad general secretary Rana Das Gupta urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina to visit Gopalganj and see how former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed grabbed the land of the Hindu community.
He said that the people in that area fell in a severe economic crisis as the former police chief forcibly took over their land on which they were dependent for their livelihood.
Rana Das Gupta’s remarks came at a press briefing on Friday evening held after a Oikya Parishad team visited the Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park owned by Benazir and his family in Sadar Upazila of Gopalganj and talked to the victims.
He said, ‘Honourable prime minister, the area is yours; visit the area for once and see how Benazir Ahmed has grabbed the land of the minorities here.’
Rana Das Gupta urged the government to return the grabbed land to their original owners.
He said that hundreds of bigha of their land were taken over by Benazir by force, threats and various other means.
‘Not only he occupied, but he fenced the land with barbed wire in such a way that no one else could enter the place,’ added the elderly minority leader.
Benazir’s roles as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion and inspector general of police had not only tarnished the image of the government but also the image of the entire state, he added.
Rana Das Gupta also said, ‘We think that the US sanctions [on Benazir] were imposed because of these activities, but we could not know these things at the time of the sanctions.’
