
The first anniversary of death of Serajul Alam Khan, one of the key organisers of the country’s War of Independence, was observed on Sunday.
Different factions of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and organisations took programmes to observe the day.
Serajul Alam, a political thinker and confirmed bachelor, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on June 9, 2023, at the age of 82.
Juba Bangali, a youth organisation, organised a discussion at seminar hall of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to observe the day where its president Raihan Tanvir chaired.
Central leader of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party Abdus Salam, Gono Forum faction general secretary Abdus Salam, leaders of Ganatantra Mancha Saiful Huq, Zonayed Saki, Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon, general secretary of Juba Bengali Yusuf Sarker and others spoke at the discussion.
On behalf of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, a central party team led by organising secretary Mosharraf Hossain Montu placed wreaths on the grave of Serajul Alam Khan at Alipur village in Begumganj in the morning.
Local leaders of the party also took part in the programme.
Later, a discussion was held at Alipur Raj Darbar Hall.
The Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, held a programme at its central office on Topkhana Road, where central leaders of the party placed wreaths on a portrait of Serajul Alam Khan.Â
Mukta Rajnaitik Andolan, a non-partisan political platform, held a view-exchange programme at Biswa Sahitya Kendra on Saturday.
Serajul Alam Khan, widely known as ‘Dada’ in the political circles, mobilised students and people during the 1960s for an armed struggle against the Pakistani rulers. He founded the Jatiya Samajtatnrik Dal in 1972 soon after the independence.
He was laid to rest in the family graveyard at Alipur village of Begumganj in Noakhali.
Serajul Alam Khan was born on January 6, 1941 at Begumganj in Noakhali.
He studied in Khulna Zila School, Dhaka College and Dhaka University.
Serajul Alam was among the three student leaders who formed the Swadhin Bangla Biplabi Parishad, also known as ‘Nucleus’ in 1962. The other two were Abdur Razzaque and Kazi Aref Ahmed.
Serajul Alam was elected as the general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League for the 1963–65 period.
He supported the six-point demand placed by Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on June 7, 1966.
During his long political career, Serajul Alam had to languish in jail for seven years.
