The Left Democratic Alliance leaders on Friday at a protest rally called on the Dhaka South City Corporation authority to refrain from evicting the dwellers of the Miranzilla Harijan Sweeper Colony in the capital’s Bangshal area until their relocation.
Protesting against the eviction of the colony dwellers, the LDA, an alliance of six left political parties, organised the rally in front of the capital’s National Press Club.
More than 10 thousand people have been living in the colony for centuries. Most of them work in cleaning the capital. But they have no alternative living place in the city, said Bazlur Rashid Firoz, coordinator of the LDA and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary.
While chairing the rally, he called on the DSCC authority to refrain from evicting them without ensuring their relocation.
Acting president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh Shahin Rahman, the SPB (Marxist) coordinator Masud Rana, the Revolutionary Communist League central leader Nazrul Islam, executive president of the Samajtantrik Party Abdul Ali, the Democratic Revolutionary Party central leader Sahidul Islam Sabuj, among others spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
Eminent citizens, including teachers, journalists and lawyers, also organised a rally in front of the capital’s National Museum.
Protesting against the eviction of the community people, they demanded that the DSCC authorities must ensure the sweepers’ alternative permanent living arrangement before evicting them.
The DSCC started eviction drive in the colony on June 10.
