The 75th founding anniversary of the ruling Awami League will be celebrated today.

The party has taken elaborate programmes to celebrate its platinum jubilee.


Established on June 23, 1949, as the Awami Muslim League at Rose Garden in the capital’s old part, later the party emerged as the Bangladesh Awami League.

The AL programmes include hoisting of national and party flags at central   and countrywide party offices at dawn, paying tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait in front of the Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7:00am, holding of a discussion at Suhrawardy Udyan at 2:30pm on the day.

AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina will chair and address the discussion.

Earlier, the party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader announced a three-day programme to celebrate the 75th founding anniversary.

All registered political parties have been invited to attend the founding anniversary programme.

Prime minister and party President Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the platinum anniversary programme in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban in the morning.

Besides, a cultural programme will be held at Rabindra Sarobar and a boat race and a cycle rally will also be arranged at Hatirjheel in the capital.

As part of the day’s programmes, a delegation of the AL central executive committee will also pay homage to the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave at Tungipara in Gopalganj at 10:30am.

AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday gave a message marking the party’s founding anniversary recalling its contribution to the birth of Bangladesh and all democratic movements.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangtha added that AL president Sheikh Hasina in her message urged her party people to remain prepared to thwart any kind of conspiracy against the country’s continued development and democracy.

‘Anti-liberation communal groups and anti-democracy and anti-development domestic and foreign evil forces are still hatching conspiracies in various ways. I call upon the leaders and workers at all levels of the party to be ready to protect the continuity of development and democracy by confronting any conspiracy of the evil forces unitedly,’ she said.

‘On this day, I recall with respect the greatest Bengali of all times, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I recall Awami League’s founder president Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and general secretary Shamsul Haque. I recall with respect Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy,’ she said.

She also recalled with respect the four national leaders, and all martyrs of struggles for freedom, War of Independence and struggles for democracy as well as all leaders and activists of the AL who embraced martyrdom to turn the party into the largest organisation of the masses.

On this occasion, the AL president greeted the party leaders, activists and supporters alongside the countrymen.

In her message, she said that since its inception, every achievement in the soil of this land had been under the leadership of the Awami League.

The party is behind all the achievements of Bengalis till today, including the country’s overall development from the protection of the dignity of the mother tongue to subsequently the War of Independence in 1971, she added.

The Awami League is one of the oldest, non-communal, largest and leading political parties in the country, she said, adding that the work of building a non-communal Bangladesh was first started by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
