Leaders of the Ganatantra Mancha on Friday at a discussion called on opposition parties to wage movements against the ruling Awami Leage government to compel it to resign from power.

They said that after the resignation of the government, a democratic government would be formed which would ensure democratic rights and economic solvency of the people.


The Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties, organised the discussion at the National Press Club to mark the first anniversary of the simultaneous movement against the Awami League government on the basis of 31-point demand.

Standing committee member of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the Awami League government had already failed fully both politically and economically.

Referring to submersion of Dhaka city roads on Friday after a heavy rainfall, Amir Khasru said that city corporations were not appointing competent persons but rather they were appointing their party people.

He called on students who were leading quota reform movements to include the issue of restoration of democracy in their movements.

Coordinator of Ganatantra Mancha and also chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan Zonayed Saki chaired the programme.

Saki said that the Mancha and opposition parties would wage movements against the government to restore democratic rule in the country.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the people of the country were ready to take part in the mass movements against the government.

‘Those days are not far away when we would wage mass movements to compel the Awami League government to resign from power,’ Manna said.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that they wanted to establish a welfare state implementing the 31-point demand.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD senior vice-president Tania Rob said that the Ganatantra Mancha would continue its movements for establishing democratic rule in the country.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu called on the government to fulfill the justified demands of the students for reforms of quotas in government jobs.

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that the Awami League government had no right to remain in power as most of the voters did not participate in the general election held on January 7.

Gono Forum faction general secretary Subrata Chowdhury said that the Awami League government had failed to introduce good governance in the country.

He called on all the opposition political parties to wage movements against the government.

Gono Odhikar Parishad general secretary Mohammad Rashed Khan, Gono Odhikar Parishad faction convener Mia Mohiuzzaman, Amar Bangladesh Party joint member secretary Asaduzzaman Fuaad also spoke at the discussion.
