Most political parties on Monday demanded a democratic transition in politics after the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

They termed the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and her government as the victory of the people.


In a video message, the acting chairman of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman, said on Monday that through the resignation of Hasina, the first part of the people’s revolution has been completed.

Now, he said, when the voters of the country would be able to cast their votes safely and confidently and establish a government accountable to the people, the final success of the historical revolution would come.

Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties, coordinator of Mahmudur Rahman Manna told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the Sheikh Hasina government was compelled to resign from power facing the mass movement of students and people.

Manna said that now they would work for a democratic transition in the politics of the country to form a welfare state, Manna said.

‘We will finalise our plans and programs for holding meetings of the combine soon,’ Manna added.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD president ASM Abdur Rob told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they would establish the democratic rights of the people in the country.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that now they would work for a democratic transition in the politics of the country on the basis of 31-point proposals announced by Ganatarntra Mancha.

‘For this, we shall reform the Election Commission to hold a free, fair, and credible general election under a caretaker government, Saki said.

‘We want to hold trials of corrupt ministers and police officers responsible for killings of students and people during the movement of students, Saki said. 

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that they would support a reform in the ruling system to make Bangladesh a welfare state.

Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu said that his party had fully supported the movement of the students.

We will take our party’s decisions on the next steps by holding a meeting of the central committee soon, Mujibul Haque said.

Workers Party of Bangladesh president and leader of the Awami League-led alliance Rashed Khan Menon told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were observing the political situation of the country and would announce their decision later.

Menon expressed his disappointment at president Shahabuddin’s invitation to ban Jamaat-e-Islami at the meeting of political parties at Bangabhaban on Monday.

Left political parties also demanded a democratic transition in the politics of the country, forming an interim government to hold a free, fair, and credible general election.

The left parties would continue their movements until the democratic transition of politics was completed, coordinator of the Left Democratic Alliance, a combine of six left political parties, Bazlur Rashid Firoz told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Left parties called on authorities concerned to take immediate steps to stop attacks on rival political leaders, activists, and minorities.

Anti-fascism Left Alliance, a combine of seven left political parties, and Bangladesh Jasod also wanted a democratic transition in politics.

Jatiya Mukti Council president Badruddin Umar and secretary Faiezul Hakim, in a press statement, demanded the end of attacks on religious minorities after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
