Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairmen retired Major Hafizuddin Ahmed and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain appointed as members of the party’s standing committee.

The announcement was made by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a press conference at the party’s Naya paltan central office in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

The elevation of the two senior leaders to the BNP’s highest policymaking body is seen as a strategic move as the party continues to strengthen its leadership structure.

The BNP standing committee consists of 19 posts, 17 of which were filled after the party’s sixth national council on March 19, 2016.

On August 8, 2016, the BNP announced its full list of standing committee members four and a half months after the party’s council.

Out of the 17-stading committee members, BNP leaders ASM Hannan Shah, MK Anwar, Tariqul Islam and Moudud Ahmed died while another standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman reportedly resigned from his post and remained inactive in politics.

On June 19, 2019, BNP vice-chairmen Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku included in the party’s highest policymaking body.
