Eight more cases, including one on charge of genocide and crimes against humanity, were filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides.    

Hasina, who fled to India after the fall of her government in a student-led uprising on August 5, now faces 24 murder cases, 4 cases on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, and 1 each for abduction and attack on the motorcade of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia.


The International Crimes Tribunal received the fourth complaint on Tuesday against Hasina, also the Awami League president, and her 23 aides on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity in indiscriminate firing during Hefazat-e-Islam rally that was organised for a long march to Dhaka in February 5–6, 2013.

Besides Hasina, Awami League general secretary and former road, transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, also the Worker Party of Bangladesh president, removed Dhaka South City mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former lawmakers Shamim Osman, Mohammad Salim, former prime minster’s industries adviser Salman F Rahman, her defence adviser Tariq Ahmed Siddique, former chief of army staff Aziz Ahmed, former National Security Intelligence director general M Manzur Ahmed, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque, former IGP and former Rapid Action Battalion director general Benazir Ahmed, former RAB additional director Ziaul Ahsan, former Detective Branch chief Harun-or-Rashid,  former Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee president Shahriar Kabir, its members Muntassir Mamun, Tureen Afroz, Shahbagh Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarkar, Ekattor Television chairman and Meghna Group managing director Mozammel Babu, former Somoy Television managing director and chief executive officer Ahmed Jobaer, AB news24.com editor Subhash Sinha Roy and former prime minister’s press secretary Naimul Islam Khan were named in the case.

Hefazat Islam Bangladesh joint secretary general Mufti Harun Izhar Chowdhury filed the fourth ICT case against Hasina and the 27 accused.

Out of the seven murder cases, one was filed against 21 people, including Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul and her aides over the murder of a fruit vendor Farid Sheikh by police firing on road near the south side of the Mayor Hanif Flyover toll plaza at Jatrabari in Dhaka on August 4.

The victim’s father Sultan Sheikh filed the complaint with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shakil Ahammed’s court.

Later, Shakil Ahammed directed the Jatrabari police to register the complaint as a First Information Report.

The other prominent figures in the case include Awami League leaders Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Kamal, Hasan Mahmud and Amir Hossain Amu, Workers Party of Bangladesh president and former minister Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president and former minister Hasanul Haque Inu, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhoury, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Habibur Rahman and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch chief Harun-or-Rashid.

Around 250 unnamed people were also made accused in the case of killing fruit seller Farid Sheikh in police fire on the road near the south side of the Mayor Hanif Flyover toll plaza at about 3:30pm on August 4.

The second murder case was filed against ousted Hasina and 24 others on Tuesday for killing garment worker Sohel Rana during the mass uprising in the city’s Adabor area on August 5, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.

Victim’s brother Mohammad Ibrahim filed an application to lodge a murder case against the 25 accused in additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sultan Shohag Uddin’s court in the morning.

The third murder case was filed against ousted Sheikh Hasina and 49 others for killing Kabi Nazrul College student Omar Faruk during the movement of the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform demanding quota reforms in government jobs in the city’s Sutrapur area on July 19, according to another BSS report.

The victim’s mother, Kulsuma Akhter, submitted an application to Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Tarikul Islam’s court on Tuesday morning to lodge a murder case against 50 people.

Accepting the plea, the court ordered the Sutrapur police to record the plaintiff’s statement and register the complaint as a first information report.

Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, Hasan Mahmud, former industries adviser to the ousted prime minister Salman F Rahman, former information state minister Arafat Ali, former textile minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, among others, were made accused in the case.

The fourth murder case was filed against 84 people, including Sheikh Hasina, on Tuesday, over the killing of child Tamim Shikdar, 13, in Rampura area of the capital on July 19.

Victim’s grandmother Mosammat Kohinur filed an application to the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Begum Afnan Somi in this regard.

The court has asked the Rampura police to record the first information report after taking deposition of the complainant.

The other accused of the case include Asaduzzaman Khan, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, former lawmaker Md Wakil Uddin, former state minister for information and broadcasting Md Ali Arafat and former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud.

The fifth murder case was filed with the Sonargaon police on Tuesday against 187 people, including Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan, Obaidul Quader, and former Awami League lawmaker for Narayanganj-4 AKM Shamim Osman, for killing bus helper Jony in the Kanchpur area, district additional superintendent of police Amir Khasru confirmed.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rangpur reported that another case was filed on Tuesday with the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Rangpur against Hasina,

her younger sister Rehana, and 57 Hasina associates for killing vegetable vendor Sajjad Hossain on July 19.

The accused in the case also include former law minister Anisul Huq along with other former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, Rashed Khan Menon and Hasanul Huq Inu, former prime minister’s press secretary Naimul Islam Khan and 300 unidentified persons.

Additional chief judicial magistrate Raju Ahamed Babu ordered the Kotwali police to register the case. 

Another murder case was filed in Joypurhat against 350 people, including Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader and Hasan Mahmud, for killing auto-rickshaw driver Mehedi, 25, on August 5, another BSS report said.

Victim’s wife Jasmin Akhter filed a murder case in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court.

Jasmin Akhter said that on August 5 her husband Mehedi went to the town to join the student movement, where he was shot dead.

At least 50 named and 1000 to 1200 unnamed leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami League, including its presidium member and Rajshahi City Corporation former mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, were accused in a case for killing a student in indiscriminate firing during recent student protests, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported.

Rana Islam, younger brother of deceased student Raihan Ali, filed the case with with Boalia model police early Tuesday, said its officer-in-charge SM Masud Pervej.

Besides Hasina, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and 14 others were accused of beating lawyers with intention to kill them during a rally in September 2023.

Lawyer Hannan Bhuiyan made an application in the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saiful Islam.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported that a case was filed against 500 people, including former lawmaker for Munshiganj-3 constituency Faisal Biplob, for the killing of carpenter Riazul Farazi on August 4.

Wife of the victim, Ruma Begum filed the case with the Munshiganj Sadar police station at about 1:00am on Tuesday, said Aslam Khan, superintendent of police in Munshiganj.

In Dhaka, another murder case was filed against five police personnel, including DMP Wari Division deputy commissioner Mohammad Iqbal over killing of one of their colleague’s son during student movement, a BSS report said.

Mst Pervin Akter, wife of police sub-inspector  Md Moynal Hossain Bhuiyan, filed the case with the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shakil Ahammed over the killing of their younger son Imam Hossain Tayem.

The court after recording statement of the plaintiff, asked the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate the matter and submit a report on October 1.
