
The Student Movement Against Discrimination platform on Thursday demanded the immediate announcement of a roadmap for state reforms.
They placed a five-point demand charter at a rally on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city after a procession called ‘Shaheedi March’ to mark the one month of the fall of the Awami League government amid a student led mass uprising on August 5.
The other demands included immediate arrest and trial of the perpetrators of the mass killing, financial and legal assistance to the families of the martyrs, identifying and bringing to justice the corrupt and fascist collaborators in the administration immediately, and declaration of the Ganabhaban as a July Memorial Museum.
Meanwhile, chief adviser to the interim government professor Muhammad Yunus in a message welcomed students for their role in the movement and urged the students to return to classrooms.
One of the key coordinators of the platform Abu Baker Mojumdar raised the demands after the pre-announced march in the Dhaka city and elsewhere across the country was held in honour of those who sacrificed their lives and those who were injured in the movement.
Sarjis Alam, another coordinator, said that the sacrifice of lives by the students and common people would not go in vain. Â
Thousands of students along with people from different walks began the march at around 3:30pm from the Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus and parading through Nilkhet, New Market, Kalabagan, Mirpur Road, Manik Mia Avenue, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Raju Memorial Sculpture areas ended at the Central Shaheed Minar, creating heavy traffic congestions.
Muhammad Idrish, father of Maruf Hossain killed during the movement, joined the march.
He said that Maruf was a student of Akota Degree College and he was brutally killed in front of BRAC University on July 19.
‘I demand justice for my son,’ said the father.
Several hundred students from different educational institutions in Rajshahi vowed to stay on the streets until the establishment of a democratic, discrimination, terrorism and corruption free welfare-based country, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi.
Addressing a rally at the Talaimari intersection in the city, Student Movement Against Discrimination Rajshahi University convener Mehedi Hasan said, ‘We will not fail the blood of our brothers. We will not let anyone snatch our victory. We will stay on the streets until the state is properly reformed.’
Another Rajshahi University convener Golam Kibria Mohammad Meshkat Chowdhury said that the students would have to be aware to thwart the rise of fascism in future.
Students of different universities, colleges, schools and madrassahs in Sylhet also observed the day urging all to stay alert to uphold the achievements of the student-led movement, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Sylhet.
Students under the banner of Student Movement Against Discrimination in Munshiganj also observed the ‘Shaheedi March’ marching through different streets in the city, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj.
Students under the platform of the Student Movement Against Discrimination began the quota reform movement in July resulting in a student-led mass uprising that forced Sheikh Hasina to resign as the prime minister on August 5 and flee to India, where she has now taken shelter.
Nurjahan Begum, health adviser to the interim government, formed on August 8, told the media on August 28 that more than 1,000 people were killed in the student-led mass movement.
