A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Awami League-backed student organisation, was beaten to death by local people in Rajshahi early Sunday.

The deceased, Abdullah Al Masud, 35, was a former assistant secretary of BCL Rajshahi University unit.

Masud, who lost his right leg in an attack reportedly carried out by Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in 2014 and used a prosthetic leg to move on, came under the attack on Saturday night, hours after he shared a post on his Facebook wall wishing prayers for him and his four-day old daughter.

No case, however, was filed with any police station in the Rajshahi city in this regard till Sunday evening.

鈥楢bout 100 to 150 鈥渃haotic people鈥 detained Abdullah Al Masud in the Binodpur area, adjacent to Rajshahi University, and beat him up on Saturday night on charges of attacking students on August 5,鈥 said SM Masud Pervez, officer-in-charge of the Boalia model police station.

He said that the angry mob first took physically challenged Masud to the Motihar police station but the officials there sent them to the Boalia police station as no case was lodged with the Motihar police station over attacking the students during the student-led mass uprising.

鈥榃hen the agitating locals were staging demonstrations in front of the Boalia police station demanding Masud鈥檚 exemplary punishment, we rescued him with the help of army personnel and sent him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition,鈥 Masud Pervez added.

Masud, also a section officer at Rajshahi University, succumbed to his injuries at about 12:30am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier, lying at Boalia police station on Saturday night, Masud told journalists that he became father of a daughter on September 3 and he went to the Binodpur area to buy medicine.

鈥楾hey [locals] detained and beat me as I used to be involved in Chhatra League politics. My right leg was amputated and both hands and legs鈥 tendons were cut off in 2014. I stopped doing Chhatra League politics a long time ago,鈥 he added.

Earlier in 2014, a group of miscreants detached the right leg of Masud from his body and cut off the tendons of his legs and hands on the Rajshahi University campus.

The then BCL leaders blamed Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir activists for the attack on Masud.

In January 2023, Masud was appointed as a store officer to Rajshahi University Medical Centre with the rank of section officer, following a directive issued by the Prime Minister鈥檚 Office.

The incident of beating former BCL leader Masud took place under the Motihar police station, Boalia model police station OC SM Masud Pervez said, adding that if a case was to be filed, it would be filed with that police station.

Motihar police station officer-in-charge, however, could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.

Contacted, Masud鈥檚 elder brother Ayatullah Behesty told 抖阴精品 that his brother was mercilessly beaten in the dark of night.

鈥榃e do not know who beat him to death. We will take legal action in this regard,鈥 he said.
