A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Sunday placed Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president and former information minister Hasanul Haque Inu on a four-day remand in a murder case filed with Lalbagh police station in the capital.

Inu was earlier placed on remand for 12 days in two phases in two other cases over murdering two people during the student movement demanding the reformation of the quota system in government jobs.

Another metropolitan magistrate court in the city on Sunday sent former shipping minister and Awami League presidium member Shahjahan Khan to jail before ending his remand period in a murder case.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mehera Mahbub allowed police to take Inu in custody for four days, responding to a police plea seeking the court’s permission to take him in their custody for seven days for interrogation in a murder case, said Lalbagh police station sub-inspector Akkas Mia, who submitted the prayer to the court.

According to the remand prayer, Ideal College honours first-year student Khalid Hasan Saifullah sustained bullet injuries during the Student Movement Against Discrimination on July 18 at Azimpur 20-storey government quarter.

The document also showed that the victim’s family identified the body on July 21 at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College.

On August 26, Hasanul Haq Inu was arrested at the capital’s Uttara in a murder case filed with New Market police station

and later was placed on a seven-day remand over killing businessman Abdul Wadud in the city’s New Market area during the movement.

On September 3, Inu was placed on remand for another five days in a case filed over murdering truck driver Sujon on July 20 in the capital.

On the other hand, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Ali Haider sent Shahjahan Khan to jail after two days of his seven-day remand period.

The court passed the order considering Shahjahan’s health condition, Dhanmondi Model police station sub-inspector Md Khokon Mia, who produced him before the court.

The application the police submitted to the court showed that the accused had provided some important evidence over the murder for which he was arrested.

‘As Shahjahan Khan’s health is not good, the court sent him to jail. We told the court that we might require him to be taken in custody for interrogation later,’ SI Khokon said.

Shahjahan Khan was placed on remand in a case filed by victim Abdul Motalib’s father Abdul Matin with the Dhanmandi police station against 176 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Shajahan Khan.

Abdul Matin said that his son was a student of Class VIII and was shot near Jigatala Bus Stand during the student-led mass uprising on August 4, and later died while undergoing treatment in the Zainul Haque Sikder Women’s Medical College Hospital.

On September 6, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch arrested Shahjahan Khan at a house in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

Awami League leaders and former ministers were facing arrests and remand after Sheikh Hasina had resigned as prime minister and fled to India amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
