Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday stated that the movement would continue until the right to vote is guaranteed.

‘Millions of people of this country wanted the country to be free from dictatorship. A few days ago, people were devoid of the right to speak. People of this country sacrificed themselves and gained that right in a short time. But we have partially succeeded. The movement of BNP will continue till the right to vote is not guaranteed,’ Tarique said at a rally at Enayetpur Islamia High School ground in Sirajganj.

He joined the programme virtually from London.

‘We have freed the country from dictatorship. We have achieved a little bit of our goal. We have a long way to go. We want to ensure people’s right to vote and form an accountable government,’ he said.

He said that he had tried to get closer to the rural people of Bangladesh.

‘We have to work collectively to make the country self-reliant. The people of Bangladesh have huge potential. We need to focus on regional production potential,’ he said.

Stating that economic liberation is possible, Tarique said, ‘We have already announced 31 points to the nation. There’s a lot here. Today, if the country has to move forward, then not only the reforms that we have asked for have to be carried out, but the country has also to be economically self-sufficient.’

He said that political emancipation alone would not bring all the benefits.

The country should be developed by exploring its potential holistically, he said.

‘If we can unite this country then surely economic liberation is possible,’ he said.

Stating that the problem of unemployment would be solved, he said, adding that Bangladesh being a country of great potential and possessing endless resources, it  should be taken forward by utilising hose resources to create employment.

Addressing the people of Sirajganj, he said, ‘As soon as the BNP came to power, it took a comprehensive plan to enrich agriculture, weaving and jute industries. The aim and objective of the BNP is to stand by the people.’

He said that if his party came to power by people’s vote, it would stand by the handloom industry.
