
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday decided for inquiry against former Awami League minister Anisul Huq and former chairman of Citizen Bank Towfika Karim over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.聽
ACC took the decision for inquiry against Anisul Huq, also a lawmaker from Brahmanbaria-4 constituency and Towfika, also a lawyer of Supreme Court, at a meeting of the commission, said ACC deputy director for public relations Aktarul Islam.聽
According to the allegations, Anisul and his alleged girlfriend Towfika amassed a huge amount of wealth through corruption and misuse of power.聽
Anisul amassed a large amount of illegal wealth by abusing power during his tenure as a minister, and he purchased 6.80 acres of land in Kasba, Trishal, and Purbachal in his name, shares of Citizen Bank and EXIM Bank amounting to Tk聽40.10 crores, savings certificates, deposits at various banks and financial institutions, and other investments worth Tk聽23.26 crore, it said.
The allegations also said that Towfika amassed a huge amount of wealth at home and abroad. Towfika was the chairman of Citizen Bank, through which Anisul used to launder crores of money to various countries, including Canada.聽
Anisul used to accept bribes of Tk 10 to 15 lakh per person in appointing most of the lower court employees, and Twfika was involved with the corruption.聽
Anisul and Towfika and their other relatives have acquired huge wealth beyond their known sources of income through irregularities and corruption, said the ACC officials.聽
The ACC on Monday also decided for another inquiry against five people, including Awami League鈥檚 Munsiganj district unit president Mohiuddin Ahmed and his wife Sohana Tahmina, over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.聽
The others are Munshiganj Sadar Upazila chairman Anisuzzaman Anis, Mirkadim Paurashava鈥檚 former two mayors, Shahidul Islam Shahin and Afsar Uddin Bhuyain.聽
Mohiuddin and his wife amassed huge amount of wealth, including four real estate companies, through misuses of power, extortion, and land grabbing, said the allegations.
