The Jatiya Party, ousted Awami League regime’s close ally, on Saturday staged demonstrations in Rangpur protesting at the visit of Student Movement Against Discrimination central coordinator Sarjis Alam.

Sarjis Alam visited Rangpur on the day.

JP leaders and activists brought out a procession with sticks and marched the main city roads.

The demonstrations in the city were held from 12:15pm to 1:15pm as the party withdrew the protests due to the protocol of the inspector general of police.

‘We have not created any obstacle to Sarjis as the IGP was visiting the city with protocol and if Sarjis visits Rangpur alone, we will resist him,’ JP’s co-chairman Mostafizur Rhaman Mostafa, also former Rangpur city mayor, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Sarjis, meanwhile, urged the interim government not to invite Jatiya Party in the ongoing political dialogues with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Sarjis attended as guest at the 6th founding anniversary celebration function of Rangpur Metropolitan Police at Rangpur Police Lines School and College auditorium attended by IGP Md Mainul Islam.

Sarjis Alam also attended a view exchange programme at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and returned to Dhaka through Saidpur. He also visited Abu Sayeed’s grave for prayers where the IGP was also present.

Addressing the police event, IGP Mainul assured the people of taking legal steps against all wrongdoings, misdeeds and injustice of the Awami League’s banned student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League.

‘Chhatra League is now a banned identity and it has no right to any political activities, meetings and rallies,’ Mainul said, adding that if Chhatra League tried to bring out processions, they would be treated like any other banned organisations.
