An activist of Juba League, youth body of the Awami League, was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death in the Rajshahi city on Saturday night.
The deceased is Md Mim, 25, son of Abdul Momin in the Ramchandrapur area.
Witnesses said that a group of 10 to 15 youths aged between 20 and 30 first caught and beat Mim in Sagarpara area in the city at about 7:30pm on Saturday allegedly for his involvement in the politics of the Awami League and attacks on a student-led procession in Rajshahi on August 5.
At one stage, the youths forcibly picked Mim up on a battery-powered rickshaw and then a battery-run three-wheeler and finally took him to the Panchavati area at about 7:50pm, they said.
The police were instantly informed by some witnesses about the incident.Â
At around 10:10pm, Mim was left in front of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and the trolley-men rushed him to the emergency department of the hospital.
Sankar K Biswas, in-charge of RMCH emergency department, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Mim was brought to the hospital dead at 10:15pm.
‘The body bore marks of severe injuries, including extreme beating and stabbing,’ he mentioned.
Sabina Yeasmin, additional deputy police commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said that Mim’s mother Mst Keya Begum filed a murder case with the Boalia police station against 13 named and 8 to 10 unnamed people on Sunday evening.
Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge of the police station, said that on information a team of the police station rushed to the spot on Saturday night but could not locate the place where Mim was taken.
‘We have already arrested two named accused in the case and are trying to arrest the other accused,’ he said, adding that Mim was involved in the politics of the Awami League.
Local people, meanwhile, said that Mim was close to JL leader Zahirul Haque Rubel who was arrested and placed on remand for several times for opening fires on the student-led procession on August 5 on both hands.
Wishing anonymity, one of the Mim’s neighbours said that Mim, who used to reside in the personal chamber of Rajshahi city JL former finance secretary Rajib Matin, went into hiding after the fall of the AL government amid student-led mass uprising on August 05.
‘Mim had returned to the area on Saturday and came under the attack in the evening,’ he said.
Mim’s mother Keya Begum, however, said that his son was not involved in any kind of politics and used to work as a day labourer.
