Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said that the interim government took charge of the administration in a complete mess, but people would not easily accept if it failed and proved inefficient in running the administration.
‘The allies of the autocrats are still conspiring in various ways to make the interim government fail, but the conspirators will not succeed if the interim government fulfil people’s aspirations,’ Tarique said in a virtual address at the third council of the Nationalist Textile Engineers Association held at the Institute of Engineering in the capital.
He said that the interim government took charge of a devastated country after the dictator fled.
‘The mess created by the mafia government cannot be cleared in three months. Again, it is not unusual or unfair for people to raise questions about the success or failure of the government after three months. But people will not accept easily if they see inefficiency in the government management,’ he added.
‘I have said before that if the priority setting is wrong for carrying out the reform, people will be consider it as inefficiency of the government,’ he said, adding that the way the injured came out of hospitals two days ago was a shame for every sane person.
He said that naturally the question arose why the rehabilitation, treatment and safety of the injured were not on the priority list.
‘This government is the product of the people’s democratic movement. If this government fails, we all fail. Some of their decisions go against the wishes of people who may think that the government is trying to impose their own decisions on them,’ he observed.
Having said that the now deposed autocratic government had made the country import-dependent and debt-dependent for the past 15 years, he pointed out that the country needed to come out of that situation.
‘The BNP is planning specifically to make the garment sector more profitable and create demands in the global market. Besides, increasing foreign investment in the small and medium especially SME sector and increasing inclusion is also under consideration of the BNP,’ he said.
A country with weak politics was bound to have a weak economy, he added.
‘We saw that during the dictatorship. The true nature of the megaprojects they did in the name of development is now coming out,’ he said.
The BNP leader also said that the 31-point programme of his party was a historical charter for the development of future Bangladesh.
‘In the implementation of these 31 points announced, quality and practical education has also been emphasised. We think that population is not a burden. If this population can be converted into human resources it is a great strength for the country’s development,’ he said.
‘We have seen that the interim government has taken the initiative to reorganise the Election Commission. People expect to be able to vote in a fair and transparent environment. People will have the opportunity to elect their representatives,’ he said.
When people would understand that the government was truly working to establish their right to vote, their relationship with people would be strengthened, he added.
To make people’s life a little better, he said, his party was working to improve the education system, to provide employment opportunities to the unemployed, to improve the medical care, and also to ensure better security.
In the past, the BNP had tried to do these things as much as possible whenever it got the opportunity through people’s vote, he added.
Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan and AZM Zahid Hossain were also present the programme, among others.
