At least 25 leaders and activists of the Santhia unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party were injured as two factions of the party clashed over formation of a convening committee at Boalmari Bazar under the upazila in Pabna.

The clashes took place between Saturday afternoon and night.


According to police and party sources, a procession led by Khairun Nahar Khanam Miru, the convener of the newly formed committee of the Santhia upazila BNP, was brought out in the afternoon.

The procession started from in front of Santhia Government Pilot High School and reached Boalmari Bazar.

The supporters of Shamsur Rahman, the former general secretary of the Santhia BNP, also brought out another procession demanding cancellation of the committee and the procession also reached Boalmari Bazar.

At one point, supporters of the two factions swooped on each other with locally made sharp weapons.

At least 25 people were injured in the clashes.

Of the injured, 11 were admitted to Pabna General Hospital, Santhia Upazila Health Complex and Bera Upazila Health Complex.

Later, injured Munna, 35, Helal Uddin, 27, Ibrahim Hossain, 42, and Hashem, 28, were shifted to Dhaka as their condition deteriorated.

The convening committee was formed on November 14.

Shamsur Rahman said, ‘Supporters of Khairun Nahar Khanam Miru and member secretary Salahuddin Khan attacked us injuring at least 15 of our leaders and activists.’

Salah Uddin Khan, member secretary of the convening committee said, ‘Our procession was attacked by Shamsur Rahman’s supporters. At least 10 of us were injured in the attack.’

Confirming the matter, inspector of Santhia police station Abdul Latif said that the police tried to calm the leaders of both the groups.

No written complaint has been lodged in this regard yet, the officer added.
