A sudden procession in support of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was brought out late Sunday night at Prabartak intersection in the Panchlaish area of Chattogram city.

The procession, which began at around 11:30pm, moved from Prabartak intersection to the Badna Shah shrine, witnesses said.

Police conducted raids early Monday night and in Monday morning, arresting two individuals in connection with the procession. The arrestees were Md Sajib Hossain, 21, a participant in the procession, and Didarul Alam, 48.

Didarul Alam, a former general secretary of the Chhatra League’s Chattogram Law College unit, is accused of providing financial support for the procession, according to police.

According to witnesses, a group of 20 to 25 youths gathered near Mimi Supermarket around 11:15pm. Chanting slogans, they swiftly proceeded towards the Badna Shah shrine via Prabartak intersection.

Panchlaish Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Solaiman confirmed the arrest, saying, ‘Around 15 to 20 individuals took out a procession from the Prabartak intersection at midnight and reached Badna Shah’s shrine within two minutes. One person was arrested in a subsequent operation at around 4:00am, and efforts are ongoing to arrest others involved.’

Earlier on October 18, videos circulated on social media showing a masked group of 20 to 50 youths staging a brief procession in Chattogram’s Jamalkhan area around 12:30am. The footage showed several motorcyclists led the group, all of whom chanted slogans before quickly dispersing.

Kotwali police arrested four individuals, Chawkbazar police arrested one, and Panchlaish police arrested three others later in connection with procession.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Chattogram issued an ultimatum to the CMP commissioner, demanding the arrest of the remaining Chhatra League leaders linked to the procession.

The student-led mass uprising forced the fall of the autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5. The Awami League leader fled to India for safety, leaving her party people in the country.
