The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday expressed concern over fire at the secretariat and urged the interim government to ensure punishment for perpetrators through a fair probe.

In a statement, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded a thorough investigation into the fire at the secretariat in Dhaka to identify those involved.

‘I am deeply concerned over the terrible fire in a sensitive building like the secretariat and the death of one  person and the injury of two or three more,’ he said.

He mourned the death of a firefighter and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and wished early recovery of the injured.

Fakhrul said that the devastating fire at the secretariat caused significant damages, with important documents reduced to ashes.

‘It is not unusual that the interim government finds itself in an embarrassing situation in the wake of such an incident,’ he added.

The BNP leader also said, ‘I strongly demand ensuring punishment after identifying the perpetrators through a fair investigation into the fire.’

He urged the interim government to give compensation to the family of the fire victims.

The fire, which broke out on the sixth floor of secretariat building 7 midnight past Wednesday, severely damaged four floors of the building, from the sixth to the ninth, which housed multiple key ministries and divisions.
