A surprise procession by the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, was brought out in Chattogram early Thursday.
At around 6:45am, a group of 25 to 30 followers participated in the procession.
A video circulating on social media shows the group, led by Mizanur Rahman, former vice-president of the Chattogram city Chhatra League, marching from Cheragi to the Jamalkhan crossing while chanting slogans.
The procession concluded at around 6:55am at Jamalkhan, where Mizanur Rahman delivered a brief speech.
In his speech, Mizanur Rahman said, ‘This is the Bangladesh of Jananetri Sheikh Hasina. Jananetri Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh for its people.’
Asked about the incident, Chattogram Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Md Roish Uddin said, ‘We have previously arrested several individuals for organising processions for this banned organisation.’
The government had earlier banned the student organisation.
Earlier on October 18, a video of another procession of the Chhatra League surfaced on social media, showing 30 to 50 individuals marching in the Jamalkhan area at around 12:30am.
The interim government officially banned the Awami League-backed student organisation, Bangladesh Chhatra League, on October 23.
