Leaders of the Jatiya Party at a rally on Wednesday alleged that their party was facing discrimination from the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus.
They alleged that the interim government was barring the Jatiya Party from holding political programmes and it was filing motivated cases against the party leaders.
The Jatiya Party held the brief rally in front of the party’s central office at Kakrail in the capital Dhaka. The rally was followed by a procession to mark the 39th founding anniversary of the party, with its chairman Ghulam Muhammad Quader presiding over the programme.
GM Quader said that their party had supported the student-people movement against discrimination in July-August, but it was now facing discrimination from the interim government.
‘We had organised a discussion meeting to mark the founding anniversary of the party on Wednesday at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, but the administration had barred us from holding the discussion meeting,’ he alleged.
‘Moreover, some miscreants attacked us on October 28 before holding a party rally to protest against murder cases filed against the party leaders,’ GM Quader said.
He called on the interim government to give credible general elections for democratic transition of the country.
Secretary general of the party Mujibul Haque Chunnu said that they did not expect discrimination from the interim government.
‘We want to cooperate with the interim government to implement the spirits of anti-discrimination student-people movement,’ he said.
Co-chairman of the party ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader said that in the past their party had faced obstacles from different political parties, but the movements of the party were not stopped.
Another JP faction led by Raushan Ershad held a discussion meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka to mark the day. Secretary general of the party Kazi Mohammad Mamunur Rashid chaired the programme.
Central leaders of the party Tuhinur Rahman, Nigar Sultana Rani and MA Gofran, among others, spoke at the discussion meeting.
