Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday urged all to be patient and to allow the interim government minimum necessary time to bring about changes.
‘The BNP continues to talk about elections because we believe an elected government is better than an unelected one. However, we are not asking for holding the elections right now. If we implement the necessary reforms and then hold elections, many of the issues will be largely resolved,’ he said.
Fakhrul’s remarks came at a discussion meeting organised by the Zia Memorial Library to mark the 89th anniversary of birth of Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club in Dhaka city. He also said that proposals for reform began coming in and hopefully the chief adviser would soon convene discussions in this regard to reach a consensus-based solution.
‘Our expectations are high, but we often lack in patience,’ he said.
Only a few months have passed since the interim government took office but many went crazy with impatience, Fakhrul said.
‘The interim government is making many mistakes, but they are bound to make mistakes because they are in power without ample political experience. They do not understand politics, so they need time to adjust,’ BNP secretary general said.
Fakhrul said that now people are taking to the streets, holding processions and raising demands, but these same people did not have that courage or opportunity to speak up before.
He further said that the interim government took over in a chaotic and ruinous state of the country and so change would not happen overnight.
The BNP leader also called for establishing a democratic structure, saying that true progress could only be achieved once that structure was in place.
