At least five people were injured in a clash between the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Bagha in Rajshahi on Thursday.
Among the injured, four Jamaat-e-Islami activists – Abdur Rahman, Sourav Ali, Abu Taher and Hossain Ali– were admitted to Bagha Upazila Health Complex.
Witnesses said that Bausa union Jamaat organised a human chain in front of the union parishad building, protesting against the ongoing irregularities, corruptions, and collecting extortion over Trading Corporation Bangladesh and Vulnerable Group Development cards distribution on Thursday.
At the same time, Bausa union BNP also brought out a protest procession there.
During their procession, the BNP leader and activists chanted slogans against the Jamaat-e-Islami and labelled the human chain as a part of a conspiracy against the BNP, leading to an altercation between the leaders and activists of the both parties.
At one stage of the altercation, both groups locked into a clash that left five people of the both side injured, witnesses said.
Bausa union Jamaat president Maulana Mujibur Rahman alleged that the BNP men attacked their peaceful human chain without any provocation.
‘Due to the BNP men’s procession, we were leaving the place. But BNP leaders and activists attacked us from behind without any provocation, leaving four of our party men injured,’ he added.
Bausa union BNP president Rezaul Karim, however, said that everything, including the TCB and VGD cards, was distributed collectively among the people.
‘We had also discussed with the local Jamaat leaders. Despite this, Jamaat organised a human chain against us. We asked them not to hold the human chain but they did not listen to us,’ he said, adding that therefore, local people organised a counter-protest against their human chain.
Rezaul Karim also alleged that Jamaat men vandalised a motorcycle belonging to one of their activists and assaulted another physically.
AFM Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bagha police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a team of police were sent to Bausa Bazar but by the time the police arrived, everyone had already left the scene.
‘No one has lodged any complaint regarding the incident. If a complaint is lodged, we will take necessary actions,’ he added.
