Activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party allegedly beat up a college teacher at Natore Sadar on Sunday.
Shajadur Rahman Selim, a senior lecturer at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib College at Natore Sadar and also the editor of local daily Dainik Prantojan, suffered fractures to his both hands following the attack.
According to police and witnesses, a group of 8-10 BNP activists led by Abdul Wahab, a follower of Natore district BNP convener Rahim Newaz, blocked Selim’s path in the Chandrakola bazar area while he was returning home from college at around 12:30pm on Sunday.
The BNP activists then took him to a nearby tea stall to have a conversation.
At one point, the BNP people snatched his mobile phone and started beating him with hockey sticks and other locally made weapons, they said.
The BNP men then left Selim inside the tea stall.
Later, local people rescued him and took him to Natore Sadar Hospital.
On the way to the hospital, Shajadur, also the teachers’ representative on the college’s managing committee, told local journalists that Abdul Wahab and his men beat him on the allegation that he had been influencing people in formation of the college’s new managing committee.
Palash Kumar Saha, residential medical officer of Natore Sadar Hospital, said that there were marks of injuries all over Selim’s body while the X-ray examinations confirmed that both of his hands were broken.
BNP activist Abdul Wahab could not be reached for comments over the phone despite repeated attempts.
Contacted, Natore district BNP convener Rahim Newaz said that if any of his followers was found involved in the incident of beating the college teacher, they would take organisational action against him.
Mahabur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar police station, said that police visited the hospital and recorded Selim’s statement along with the names and addresses of the attackers.
‘No written complaint has been filed with the police station till 7:30pm, but efforts are under way to apprehend the perpetrators,’ he added.
