A case was filed against 40 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir for allegedly beating a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party over dispute on Friday.

The victim is Azad Hossain, the former member secretary of the upazila BNP unit.

The incident took place in front of the main gate of the police station at Ullapara upazila on Friday, leaving Azad severely injured.

Confirming the matter, Ullapara police officer-in-charge Rokibul Hasan said that victim’s brother filed the case against 15 named leaders and activists of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir.

Besides, 20 to 25 unidentified people were also accused in the case.

‘The main accused in the case, Hafizul Islam, the publicity secretary of the municipal Jamaat unit, was handed over to the police by the local people on Friday night,’ he said.

He was sent to the district jail through the court on Saturday afternoon and efforts were under way to arrest the other accused, added the police officer.

Police said that after jummah prayers at the Upazila mosque, BNP leader Azad arrived at the gate of the police station when Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists attacked him on Friday.

Meanwhile, Ullapara upazila unit Jamaat amir Shahjahan Ali in a video message on Saturday claimed that BNP leader Azad beat up municipal Jamaat publicity secretary Hafizul Islam on April 17 in a dispute over the toll collection for Ullapara Municipal Bus Terminal.

Following the incident, an attack was made on BNP leader Azad later, he added.
