Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday called for the arrest and trial of former chief justice A B M Khairul Haque and former chief election commissioners Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and K M Nurul Huda, accusing them of ruining democratic institutions and establishing fascism in the country.

He made the demand at  an event organised by Amra BNP Poribar at the BNP Gulshan office in the city.

Rizvi also questioned as to why the ‘false cases’ against 60 lakh BNP leaders and activists have not been withdrawn, while earlier cases against advisers of the interim government have already been withdrawn.

Rizvi raised concerns over the continued public presence of key individuals linked to the establishment of fascism in the country.

He further questioned as to why those responsible for ruining democratic institutions and perpetuating fascism remain unaccountable.

‘Why is Justice A B M Khairul Haque still at large? He is the only person who stopped the continuity of democracy and silenced it, giving Sheikh Hasina the opportunity to create a terrifying form of fascism,’ Rizvi said.

Rizvi also questioned as to why figures such as former chief election commissioners Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and K M Nurul Huda, who were accused of roles in sabotaging free and fair elections, had not been arrested.

He called them ‘the killers of democracy,’ criticising their role in damaging the electoral process.

Rizvi urged the government to take action, saying, ‘If they are not in the country, wherever they are in the world, it is the responsibility of the interim government to arrest them and bring them to justice.’

He said that the ‘crisis period’ was not yet over, although people were living in relative comfort, not everyone has been acquitted in the cases filed against 60 lakh BNP leaders and activists.

He said that, in the meantime, the voice of fascism is being heard again, which is not only deeply saddening but also dangerous.

Rizvi questioned if fascism were to rise again in the land of Bangladesh, what answer they would give to the martyred.

‘I just want to tell the interim government: there were cases against many of you, including two advisers, but those cases have been withdrawn. Why, then, have the false cases against BNP leaders, activists, and other protesters not been withdrawn?’ he said.
