The National Investigation Agency on Monday gave its consent to jailed Kashmir leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, for him to take oath as an MP on July 5, reports The Indian Express.
Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh will on Tuesday pass an order on the interim bail plea of Rashid, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi in a 2017 terror funding case.
He won Lok Sabha elections 2024 as an Independent candidate from the Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir by a margin of over 2 lakh votes against his nearest rival, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.
The NIA counsel did not oppose Rashid’s plea to take oath but said he should be subject to certain restrictions such as not speaking to the media. The counsel further said the MP should finish taking oath and all other activities within one day only.
A Delhi court last time adjourned the interim bail plea hearing of Rashid until July 1 and granted the NIA time to file its reply on the petition.
Rashid, who has been in jail since 2019 after the NIA charged him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, earlier moved an interim bail plea before the Patiala House Court in Delhi for taking oath as an MP.
Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi, representing Rashid, told The Indian Express that he had filed an application seeking interim bail or custody parole for the MP’s oath taking and other parliamentary functions.
