The India’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to file a fresh status report in connection with the murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, reports The Hindu.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also ordered the protesting doctors to resume work by 5:00pm Tuesday failing which the state government will be authorised to take adverse action against them. This directive followed senior advocate Kapil Sibal’s submission that 23 individuals have died due to inadequate medical treatment.
However, the top court also instructed the West Bengal government to address doctors’ concerns and ensure their safety and security. This involves installing CCTV cameras, establishing restrooms, and implementing other necessary structural improvements.
Earlier, the Centre filed an application in the apex court alleging ‘unpardonable’ non-cooperation by the West Bengal government. In its application, the union ministry of home affairs has termed the alleged non-cooperation of the TMC government as an example ‘symptomatic of a systemic malaise’ and sought a direction to the State authorities to extend full cooperation to the Central Industrial Security Force.
On August 20, the court termed the rape and murder as ‘horrific’ and issued a slew of directions including setting up a 10-member National Task Force to formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals.
The incident occurred on August 9 and the trainee doctor was found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall which led to nationwide protests.
