
Dhaka stocks advanced for the second consecutive session on Wednesday, as bargain hunters were active on the trading floor after the recent market plunge, market operators said.
DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, increased by 60.88 points, or 1.16 per cent, to close at 5,302.72 points on the day after gaining 21.65 points in the previous trading session.
The key index fell slightly on the start of the session, but rebounded soon and maintained the positive trend until the end of the session and remained in the green territory, market operators said.
With the rise in the investors’ activity on the day, the total turnover of the Dhaka bourse increased to Tk 605.12 crore compared with that of Tk 524.56 crore in the previous session.
The total turnover crossed the Tk 600-crore mark after 40 days on the day. Before Wednesday, the bourse’s turnover topped Tk 600 crore on May 16 to stand at Tk 676.79 crore.
The large capitalised scrips contributed the most to the indices to advance.
The market recovery was aided by price appreciation in the majority of stocks, market operators said.
In the past 18 weeks, the DSE moved forward in only four weeks.
Of the 404 issues traded on Wednesday, 251 advanced, 89 declined and 64 remained unchanged.
The DSE Shariah index increased by 16.27 points, or 1.41 per cent, to close at 1,165.83 points on the day.
The DS30 index gained 25.89 points, or 1.37 per cent, to finish at 1,903.83 points.
On the sectoral front, pharmaceutical issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by the food and textile shares.
Unilever Consumer Care topped the turnover chart on the day with its shares worth Tk 62.21 crore changing hands.
Capitec Grameen Bank Growth Fund, Alif Industries, Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa, Pragati Life Insurance, Square Pharmaceuticals, Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice-cream, Orion Pharma, BRAC Bank and Robi Axiata were the other turnover leaders.
