
Bangladesh has remained below the 100th position in terms of mobile internet speed performance on the global stage despite mobile network operators making improvement in their performances, according to Ookla鈥檚 Speedtest Global Index for April.
The country currently holds the 110th position out of 144 countries聽in the index, rising up two notches, while it held the 112th position in a previous report published by Ookla in March.
The latest report showed that the average internet download speed in Bangladesh was 23.83 Mbps. This is a slight drop from 24.59 Mbps reported in March.
Meanwhile, Qatar topped the list with the fastest internet, boasting an average speed of 314.78 Mbps, up from 313.30 Mbps in the previous report.
According to Ookla鈥檚 rankings, neighbouring country India ranked 15th in the world with an average download speed of 104.15 Mbps.
This marked an improvement from its previous position at 16th, although the median download speed dropped slightly from the previous speed of 105.85 Mbps.
Among other South Asian countries, the Maldives secured the 32nd position, Myanmar 102nd, Sri Lanka 122nd, Pakistan 121st, Nepal 131st and Afghanistan 141st.
In Bangladesh, there are five main mobile network providers. Among them, Banglalink was found to be the fastest, according to the report.
The report also looked at how consistent each provider鈥檚 service was. Banglalink stood out with 89 per cent of its tests showing a minimum download speed of at least 5 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of at least 1 Mbps.
Additionally, the report noted that all the major mobile network providers in Bangladesh, including Banglalink, Grameenphone, Airtel, Robi and state-owned Teletalk, had shown improvements in their internet speeds compared to the previous report.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, Banglalink achieved a median download speed of 26.74 Mbps. This was followed by Robi with a median download speed of 24.62 Mbps and Airtel with that of 23.18 Mbps.
Grameenphone and Teletalk took the last two positions, with a median download speed of 21.78 Mbps and 6.05 Mbps respectively in the same period.
Robi Axiata and Airtel merged in November 2016.
Bangladesh also showed improvement in terms of fixed broadband on the global stage, rising up two notches to stand at 106th position, while the country held 108th position in a previously published report.
The median fixed broadband download speed for April was reported at 46.52 Mbps, an increase from the previous report鈥檚 median fixed broadband download speed of 44.25 Mbps.
The Speedtest Global Index by Ookla compares internet speed statistics from across the globe and derives its data from monthly tests conducted by actual users using Speedtest.
