
Bangladesh has slightly progressed in terms of mobile internet speed, according to Ookla鈥檚 Speedtest Global Index for June.
The country has moved up 19 positions globally, now ranking 90th out of 108 countries in mobile internet speed index, while the country previous held the 109th position in May.
The index highlighted that the average mobile internet download speed in Bangladesh increased to 24.49 Mbps, a slight improvement from 23.82 Mbps in May.
Globally, Qatar remains at the top of the list, offering the fastest mobile internet with an average speed of 334.63 Mbps. This is up from 329.37 Mbps, showing that Qatar continues to provide high-speed internet to its users.
Neighbouring country India also ranks high, holding the 12th position with an average download speed of 107.03 Mbps. India has improved from its previous 16th position, although the median download speed saw a slight decrease from 107.37 Mbps.
Among the other South Asian countries, Myanmar is placed at 74th, Pakistan at 97th and Sri Lanka at 98th in terms of mobile internet speed. The June report did not include data from the Maldives, Nepal and Afghanistan.
Bangladesh鈥檚 mobile network landscape is dominated by five major providers, namely Banglalink, Grameenphone, Robi, Airtel and Teletalk.
Among them, Banglalink has emerged as the fastest internet provider. According to the report, 89 per cent of Banglalink鈥檚 tests showed a minimum download speed of at least 5 Mbps and an upload speed of at least 1 Mbps.
The report also noted improvements across all major mobile network providers in Bangladesh. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Banglalink achieved a median download speed of 26.74 Mbps, followed by Robi with 24.62 Mbps and Airtel with 23.18 Mbps.
Grameenphone and Teletalk, however, were at the bottom of the list, with median download speeds of 21.78 Mbps and 6.05 Mbps respectively.
Robi and Airtel had merged back in November 2016.
In addition to mobile internet, Bangladesh also showed some progress in fixed broadband speed. The country has moved up two places to rank 100th globally among 159 countries, compared to its previous position of 108th.
The report states that the median fixed broadband download speed in June was 47.43 Mbps, an improvement from the 46.96 Mbps reported in May.
Ookla鈥檚 Speedtest Global Index, which provided these rankings, is a widely recognised tool that compares internet speeds across the world.
