Rajshahi University-based theatre troupe Anushilon Natyadal premiered its 66th production titled Operation Katukutu depicting social anomalies on Rajshahi University campus recently.

The play, written and directed by Professor SM Abu Bakr, depicts anomalies in justice and society along with corruption in different sectors, including education, medical and business.

The play begins with a doctor who is more concerned about his fees than patients’ well-being.

He writes prescription without properly hearing about problems of a patient and asks him to buy medicine from a particular pharmacy.

Besides, the doctor’s assistant embezzles money whenever he gets the opportunity and behaves badly with poor patients.

A member of the ‘Katukutu’ gang visits the doctor and asks him to show his certificate.

After the doctor fails, the gang punishes him by tickling him for three days.

The gang next punishes a mugger, a government official who takes bribe, and a corrupt businessman.

The play ends with the message that punishment given to criminals is not really effective because criminals commit similar crimes again after serving the punishment.

Criminals should be given mental development instead of corporal punishment as crime is ‘in the mind’ of the people, not in their body.

Among others, Hriday Talukder, Rakibul Alam, Sudipta Sarkar, Faria Tuz Jahan, Mosharraf Hossain, Antar Mohonto and Subrata Kumar Halder acted in the play.
