Theatre troupes premiered two plays written by national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Thursday at the ongoing weeklong theatre festival at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity.

The repertory theatre troupe of district Shilpakala Academy, Gazipur premiered Kazi Nazrul Islam’s one-act play titled ‘Putuler Biye’ directed by Khandakar Rafiq, and Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi premiered Nazrul’s leto play ‘Bidyabhutum’ adapted, scripted and directed by Ratan Siddique.

‘Putuler Biye’ depicted the importance of religious harmony. It revolves around the marriages of dolls.

‘Children, especially in villages, love to play with dolls. Many popular games are disappearing in the country. We staged the play in a bid to promote our tradition and non-communal spirit of Kazi Nazrul Islam,’ said Khandakar Rafiq.

Leto play ‘Bidyabhutum’ depicts a story based on the well-known proverb ‘A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’.

‘At the age of 11-12, Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote and composed this leto play. It is a short play. We have tried to portray the performance style of 1910s staging the play,’ said Ratan Siddique.
