
The 75th anniversary of the birth of eminent playwright Selim Al Deen was observed in a limited scale on Sunday.
Marking the day, the drama and dramatics department of Jahangirnagar University brought out a procession titled 鈥楽mran Shobhajatra鈥 on the campus, which ended at Selim Al-Deen鈥檚 grave.
Five theatre troupes placed floral wreath on his grave.
The JU drama and dramatics department displayed the life and work of Al Deen at the lobby of old arts building on the campus, which also featured a commemorative session on Al Deen.
The students of the department performed selected parts of Al Deen鈥檚 play 鈥楥haka鈥 and 鈥楴imajjan鈥 at the evening.
Marking the day, theatre troupe Swapnadal also organised a virtual programme.
Inscribed with the slogan 鈥楤angla Natyar Shilpa Shakti Bishwa Karbe Jay, Selim Al Deen, Rabindranath Amar Akshay鈥, the troupe arranged a webinar on the day.
Presided over by Professor Rashid Harun, theatre activists Fazle Rabbi, Ali Hasan, Juana Sobnom, among others, were present as discussants at the session.
Founder and chief secretary of Swapnadal, Zahid Repon, said, 鈥榃e will offer a special performance of Al Deen鈥檚 play 鈥淗argaj鈥 to pay our tribute to him. We are waiting for a peaceful situation to prevail across the country.鈥
Selim Al Deen was born on August 18, 1949 at Senerkhil in Feni.
After joining Jahangirnagar University鈥檚 Bangla department in 1974 as a lecturer, he founded the drama and dramatics department at the university.
