Abdullah Al Mamun

Today is the 16th anniversary of death of eminent playwright, novelist, filmmaker and actor Abdullah Al Mamun.

Born on July 13, 1942 in Jamalpur, Abdullah Al Mamun graduated in history from Dhaka University.


Abdullah Al Mamun committed himself to writing and directing dramas as well as acting since his school days. He was in favour of promoting moral values in social and national life and stood firm against the degeneration of values throughout his career as a playwright.

He was a founding member and playwright-director of the theatre troupe named Theatre.

In his kaleidoscopic journey of over five decades, he wrote 25 plays, seven novels, an autobiography titled ‘Amar Ami’ and a travelogue titled ‘Manhattan’.

His works include ‘Subachan Nirbasane’, ‘Sangshaptak’, ‘Ekhono Kritadash’, ‘Ekhono Duhsamay’, ‘Amader Santanera’, ‘Kokilara’, ‘Dyasher Manush’, ‘Spardha’, ‘Meraj Fakirer Ma’, ‘Cross Rodey Crossfire’, ‘Shahzadir Kalo Nekab’, ‘Ainay Bandhur Mukh’, ‘Tritya Purush’, ‘Shapath’, ‘Pathar Samay’ and ‘Senapati’.

He also left his mark as a filmmaker. He directed films, including ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Sakhi Tumi Kar’, ‘Ekhoni Samay’, ‘Dui Jiban’ and ‘Janamdukhi’.

He received the Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Literary Award and National Film Award.

Abdullah Al Mamun passed away on August 21, 2008.
