Most of the cultural institutions, cinemas and art galleries in Dhaka are running in full swing but with a thin audience.

Theatre activists, an art gallery curator and the Star Cineplex manager said on Wednesday that audiences would explore more when cultural activities would get more promotion.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy recently organised a three-day Lalon Smaranotshab which received a huge audience.

‘The festival received a huge response from audiences. Opening and closing events at the main auditorium of the national theatre hall was almost full and the open air event was also enjoyed by huge crowds,’ said the drama and film department director of BSA Faiz Zahir.

After 83 days of closure, the national theatre was reopened with three consecutive theatre performances which received more than 400 people in three days, Faiz Zahir said, adding that audiences will come if theatre troupes’ starts staging plays every day, including weekly holidays.

Prominent theatre troupe Swapnadal will stage its anti-war production Tringsha Shatabdi on Friday at National Theatre of BSA.

‘It’s the 123rd performance of the play Tringsha Shatabdee based on Indian playwright Badal Sarkar’s story. We hope a good number of audiences will enjoy the play at the theatre,’ said Zahid Repon, who adapted and directed the play, mentioning that organising theatre shows regularly audiences will come back to the theatre.

Safiuddin Shilpalay founder Ahmed Nazir said that audiences came regularly to visit the art exhibition at their gallery.

‘A huge audience has come to visit recent exhibitions, especially after reopening the educational institutions in the city. Many galleries are organising exhibitions and art camps which are good for normalising the cultural situation in the country,’ Ahmed Nazir said.

Media and marketing manager of Star Cineplex Mesbah Uddin Ahmed said that they received a good number of audiences at the shows although not many new films were released after August 5.

‘Bangladeshi films have not been released for a long time, and we cannot premiere international movies on the same date due to the absence of a film censor board. The Bangladesh Film Certification Board is now working. So, I hope we can premiere them on the same date,’ Mesbah said, adding that Bangladeshi film star Shakib Khan’s forthcoming film ‘Dorod’ announces its release date which also will increase the audiences.
