Bangladesh Competition Commission chairperson Pradip Ranjan Chakraborty on Saturday said that the commission had strengthened the market monitoring system and was rigorously investigating cases filed for anti-competitive activities to maintain a fair competitive environment in business.

He said that the commission was committed to ensuring fair competition by preventing anti-competitive behaviours such as monopolistic market arrangements and cartels.


At a seminar on ‘Implementing the BCC Act and the Role of Media in Establishing Fair Competition in the Market,’ jointly organised by the BCC and the Economic Reporters’ Forum at the ERF Auditorium in the capital Dhaka, he emphasised that ensuring fair competition is pivotal for driving the country towards sustainable economic growth through innovation and increased productivity.

In a presentation, BCC member Md Hafizur Rahman highlighted the implementation of the Competition Act 2012.

He said that the BCC had filed 97 cases, of which 51 were resolved through fines and penalties. Additionally, the commission issued 74 suo moto cases in response to observed abuses of the Competition Act by various companies.

ERF president Refayet Ullah Mirdha presided over the meeting while BCC members Sowdagar Mustafizur Rahman and Salma Akhter Jahan also spoke at the event.

ERF assistant general secretary Mizanur Rahman moderated the event.
